Be So Good They Can't Ignore You

“Be so good they can’t ignore you”. According to the trusty internet, this quote came from comedian Steve Martin in an interview he gave.

I was raised with this philosophy by my father who believed in hard work all the time. If you were a hard worker he liked you, and if you weren’t a hard worker he didn’t like you. His belief was that if you worked hard people would notice and think well of you.

But as I grew older I noticed that people who didn’t work very hard also got ahead, some were very well liked, and some who worked their butts off never seemed to catch a break. Then I noticed that people who talked about what they did, shamelessly self-promoted, got a lot of positive attention. My dad called them “braggarts” and I was taught to look down on such behavior. So that brought me back to just working as hard as possible and hoping the world would take note.

As a teenager I aspired to be a professional golfer. So I went to the golf course everyday, worked hard to develop my swing, but no one noticed. Not because I had a bad swing, but because I played at a country golf course that had no real membership and was largely deserted. It closed a few years later.

What I didn’t understand was that Being so Good They Can’t Ignore You involves more than hard work.  It does involve hard work, but that has to be integrated with exposure, goals, self-awareness, positive thinking, and creative problem solving. You can be the hardest working ditch digger on the planet, but until you stop digging ditches and find other ways to use a shovel you will always be a ditch digger. Throw in some Elon Musk attributes and you may find yourself digging a ditch under a major city like Boston. But hard work in isolation probably won’t get you there.

Later in life I revived my dream of making a living on the golf course. Again, it didn’t work out, but my mantra of “Be so good they can’t ignore you” got me a lot closer this time. I got a coach, joined a club, learned to video my swing, and had way more fun than ever before. Every day I was striving to be better than the day before. And people noticed.

This is the attitude and practice that has fueled Hunters Woods Outdoors. As an entrepreneur being so good they can’t ignore you extends to all different aspects of the business.

We try to be the best communicator we can be. When you say meaningful things, people will take note and will want to hear what you have to say whenever you open your mouth. You don’t become a good communicator just by talking all the time; that just makes a lot of inane prattle tumble out of your face hole. As a customer focused business, we put ourselves in your position so when we speak it is to make sure your needs are met in the best way possible.

This also extends to your project and product offerings. We try to bring product offerings that the customers haven’t thought of but would be a perfect match for their needs. Constant streams of sales talks and then upsells are two things we try to avoid. We want customers to be glad to hear what we have to say and this is possible because of our truly custom solutions and products.

Unlike home stores with one-size-fits-all products, being unignorable means we tailor proposals to fit your specific needs. Whether it's aligning with your architecture or eclectic decor, we offer creative solutions that generic products lack.

This concept also applies to customer service. When a customer has a concern we see it from their angle and give a well thought response that actually addresses their exact problem and solves it.

“Be So Good They Can’t Ignore You” is the principle that drives our business endeavors.
